Monday morning fire brought business in the area to a halt and destroyed merchandise worth millions of shillings.
The Democratic Party Building that gutted fire in and inside. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson said police managed to extinguish the fire and recovered one dead body.
Owoyesigyire adds that details of the deceased are not yet known,but police have embarked on searching the scene of crime to find out whether there are more people who died in the inferno.
The blaze started at around 8:30pm inside the building that houses the oldest Ugandan political party, Democratic Party (DP) and a number of businesses were affected.
The Police Fire Prevention and Rescue Services Directorate deployed seven fire fighting vehicles to put down the fire but there was delay in extinguishing it due to absence of fire hydrants at the building.
According to Oweyesigire, majority of the people managed to escape adding that investigations to ascertain the exact cause of the fire have kicked off.
