SCIENCE TEACHERS STRIKE OVER LOST SALARIES SINCE JUNE 2023

SCIENCE TEACHERS STRIKE OVER LOST SALARIES SINCE JUNE 2023. The strikes that have been going on in the country ranging from traders to medical personals have been extended to science teachers as well particularly college science teachers. And college teachers I mean Teacher training colleges. Uganda is made of about 21 teacher training colleges and only four have been lately affected. Last month alone saw another college added to the four affected ones which include Busubizi in Mityana, Ibanda, Bulera in Hoima and now Bushenyi. It is expected that as the new term begins this June, more the rest of the none affected colleges will join the strike as well as secondary schools in the country.

These teachers have recently launched their complaints to the deputy speaker Hon. Tayebwa and have been looked into but in vein. The teachers have been patient with government since early last year 2023 until this February 2024 that the science teachers decided to appear in parliament to continue complaining and launching their aggrievances. The deputy Speaker Hon Tayebwa ordered those responsible for books of accounts to immediately take effect and resolve the issue since President Museveni had directed that all science teacher’s salaries be increased effectively.

According to TKG Music reporter, the science teachers have actually been earning the increased salaries for months as per the President’s directive not until the commissioners at the Ministry of Education saw it was not right for primary teachers’ colleges to continue earning such amounts. The education commission department went on to put down the science teacher’s new salaries down to the original payments as it used to be. This is exactly why the teachers have gone on to strike till to date. The strikes have actually been going on since early March 2023 though not so loud but obviously affect science students across the country because these kids for months now have not been attending classes and no one seem concerned.

If I may ask, who is responsible for this? These strikes have been extended to now even city traders for having been subjected to higher commodity taxes that saw Kikuubo and other shops close during the course of last week starting 16th Tuesday 2023 in Kampala and spread to other major cities across the country. To my amusement, the government is doing nothing to resolve these things. If sectors are beginning to launch strikes one after the other, obviously, there is a big problem in the country. And someone if not the President should come out immediately unless if you want to show everyone how you have failed at your responsibilities as to take the country forward and not backwards. If there’s no problem in the country, then we would not have strikes going on all-over.
